Mangawhai lodge and Activities
Mangawhai was settled in the 19th Century, and once boasted a busy harbour, boat building industry and thriving kauri gum trade. Whilst this trade has ceased, much of the colonial charm remains. Today Mangawhai is a small but popular holiday & vacation destination with walkways, beaches, cafes, shopping and renowned chocolate factory.
The area has a permanent population of 1800 people hidden away in its environs. Mangawhai Lodge provides the perfect base to explore the treasures of Northland, North Auckland and the Bay of Islands.
At Mangawhai Heads we have a surf beach (patrolled in summer) and sheltered harbour. There are numerous walkways, Five beachs and the Tomarata Lakes all within 10 minuters drive. The Mangawhai bird sanctuary, and several other orthinological sites within a half days drive, diving, fishing, horse riding, mountain biking trails and kayak hire.
Mangawhai has a museum,golf course, quality crafts: gift shops and galleries, cafes, restaurants, and is the home of the famous "Bennetts of Mangawhai" chocolate factory.

Northland Accommodation
Sea life and Pottery Day Trip: Follow the coast south to Goat Island Marine Reserve for snorkelling & glass bottom boat trips. Drive on to Matakana, browse the boutique shops, see a movies or visit Morris & James Pottery Factory & Cafe, lunch or wine taste at the nearby vineyards. Stop at the charming town of Warkworth then follow State Highway 1 back to Mangawhai
(2 hours return, plus stops).
Bay of Islands Day Trip: Drive north to the Bay of Islands, spend a couple of hours exploring Waitangi, Paihai and Russell , drive west to the Hokianga Harbour and south through the Waipoua Kauri Forest visiting the giant trees, follow SH 12 back via Dargaville or Whangarei, and south to Mangawhai.
(5 hours return, plus stops).
Snorkelling Day trip: Drive north to Whangarei follow the coast out to Tutakaka where you can dive and snorkel at the famous Poor Knights Islands (2.15 hours, plus stops).
